Want to design the perfect space for dinner parties? Read this guide with three tips for furnishing a dining space to host extended family.

Dining together as a family is one of the best ways to maintain your relationship and connect on a meaningful level. For many families, it’s a staple of daily routine; for others, they make the most of it when they’re able to get together.

It doesn’t need to be just with your immediate family. A dinner party is a perfect excuse to see those long-lost extended family members.

However, your dining room needs to be adaptable and must be able to cope with an increased number of guests as and when it is necessary.

We’ve put together a guide with three top tips for furnishing your dining room to handle extra guests. Check it out below.

Choose the Right Dining Set

Perhaps the most important aspect of furnishing your dining space is choosing the right dining set. There are several cheap dining room sets available with a wide range of different styles, so take a look and see what catches your eye.

The most important factor to look for is versatility. You want a table that can comfortably seat more guests if needed and one that will have the additional space required to pull up extra chairs.

One excellent option for a versatile dining room is an extendable dining table. These can be opened out to create space for extra guests and then folded away again when it is just you and your immediate family eating.

Remember to measure your dining room carefully to ensure you are only purchasing furniture that will fit. If you opt for an extendable table, remember to measure the size of the table at its full extension to ensure you don’t have any space issues.

Get Extra Chairs

If you’re planning to invite additional guests over for dinner, having extra chairs on hand is absolutely vital. Wherever possible, get chairs that fit with your other chairs and dining table. However, different chairs will do in a pinch. Too many is better than too few. The last thing you want is to have more guests than seats.

To save space, extra chairs can be stored in a spare room or even in a shed or garage to keep them out of the way when they are not needed.

Consider the Lighting

Lighting is vital in any interior space, but particularly so for the dining room. You’ll need to strike a careful balance. Lights that are too bright can be invasive and off-putting, while lights that are too dim can result in dinner guests struggling to see what they are doing.

If you are only having guests over for dinner occasionally, you must ensure that their area of the dining room is adequately lit. This could require the introduction of additional lighting, such as a floor lamp, to further illuminate that part of the space.

Hosting dinner parties can be a fantastic way to keep up contact and maintain your relationships with friends and family. Follow the steps that we’ve outlined in the guide above to ensure that your dining room is up to the task.
