What to Do If Your Floor Tiles Always Look Dirty?

Last Updated on

Floor tiles are an easy-to-clean addition to any home. Unfortunately, some tiles always seem to be dirty even if they are constantly cleaned. If you wish to get the most out of this type of flooring, you should stop to consider the root cause of the problem.

If your tile is new, one of the more likely problems is grout haze. Grout haze is a thin layer of grout that is left on the tiles, and if not properly removed will catch dirt and particulate matter easily. The dirt can be washed off easily, but the grout haze will catch more dirt quickly – thus continually making your tiles look dirty. The problem can be remedied by buffing off the offending layer. This should be done soon after laying the tile, but the buffing process can be undertaken at any time. Once the grout haze is removed, you should find your tiles far easier to keep clean.

Another possible culprit is soap scum. If you use any type of detergent to clean your tiles, the residue can build up over time. Acting in much the same manner as grout haze, soap scum not only allows for more dirt build-up on floor tiles but it also creates a layer of build-up that can make your tiles look dirty on its own. The best way to get rid of this problem is with hot water and a scrubbing pad. While it is a laborious and time-consuming task, scrubbing away the soap will bring new life to your tiles.

If your tiles always look dirty, it’s likely that you have some sort of residue on your floor. Check to see if it is grout haze or soap scum, and then take the appropriate measures to have the layer of build-up removed. With a little work, you can restore your tiles.
