What is Water Ionizing and How Does it Work?

Last updated on September 19, 2021

Water ionizing is one of the ways to ensure the quality of your drinking water. Here’s everything you need to know about it. Read on!

There are so many different choices of water, choices such as alkaline water, electrolyte water, distilled water, purified water all seem the same. Most people don’t usually take into consideration the type of water they are drinking or using at home, as long as they have been assured that it is clean and safe for consumption.

Alkaline water is a popular choice among the different waters. But how much do you really know about it? Here is everything you need to know about water ionizing, how it works, and the different benefits of ionized alkaline water.

What is Alkaline Water?

In simple terms, alkaline water is water that has been processed to have a pH level of 8 and above on the pH scale. For reference, neutral water has a pH level of 7, and anything below that would be considered acidic. In nature, alkaline water is the outcome of water that has passed over rocks and gathered their minerals. For human consumption, an ionizer is used to make water more alkaline.

Water ionizers filter water through the process of electrolysis. What this means is that water is gathered in the ionizer and electric currents are used to separate the different molecules in the water. Once the contaminants and acidic properties of the water has been separated, the filtered ionized water is then dispensed

Types of Ionized Water

There are three types of ionized alkaline water, each with different pH levels meant for consumption at different times and for different circumstances. The three types are as follows: low alkaline water, mid alkaline water, and standard alkaline water. You can check the pH level of your water using pH tester kits. Here’s how they differ:

Low Alkaline Water

Low alkaline water is water that has a relatively low pH level in comparison to standard alkaline water, but still has a pH level higher than 7 which is neutral. This type of alkaline water is recommended for children or for those looking into making a slow transition into drinking alkaline water regularly.

Mid Alkaline Water

Mid alkaline water sits below a pH level of 9.0. This is usually the buffer between low alkaline water and standard alkaline water to ensure that your body is adjusted to standard alkaline water.

Standard Alkaline Water

Standard alkaline water has a pH level of 9.5 and is great for daily consumption once the body has adjusted to it. Standard alkaline water can also be used around the house for cleaning and for washing food.

Different Types of Water Ionizers

For the most part, all water ionizers have the same features. They differ in their types of plates. Again, all ionizers have titanium-coated plates. Titanium-coated plates set apart high-quality ionizers from ineffective ones. Titanium speeds up the process of electrolysis and is the best medium for ionization. Different ionizers have different types of titanium plates for different purposes.

Among the different ionizer plates, there are solid plates, slotted plates, holed plates, and mesh plates. Solid plates in ionizers allow the electricity to target certain areas on the plate with more accuracy. Slotted plates steer the electricity in certain directions. Holed and mesh plates are very similar to each other in the way that they allow more movement in different directions. Mesh plates are the most effective for ionizing water.

Benefits of Alkaline Water

While alkaline water is not vital in terms of survival, there are definitely more benefits to drinking alkaline water regularly as opposed to just sticking with normal tap water. Here are a few of them:

Improved Hydration

Since alkaline water has been separated from other contaminants and molecular particles, the water molecules take a newer, smaller clustered form which allows better penetration to cells thus maximizing hydration.

Added Mineral Benefits

Alkaline water is often enhanced with minerals such as magnesium and calcium but in safe and beneficial amounts. These minerals can support stronger bones which supports a healthier lifestyle in the long run.

Detox

In terms of the pH scale, acidity and alkaline are polar opposites. This means that any existing acidic build-up in the body can be neutralized or managed by the introduction of alkaline water. This also helps to boost the immune system.

Water ionization is an option that everyone should look into at least once in their lifetime. There are many benefits to drinking alkaline water and incorporating the use of an ionizer in your lifestyle. While there are many different types of water and modes of purification, a general background knowledge brings you one step closer to making decisions to meet all your water filtration needs.
