Howard Restor-A-Finish

Restor-A-Finish penetrates faded lacquer, shellac, and varnish finishes to bring back the original color and luster. It restores the depth of grain in wood finishes, going much deeper than temporary 'scratch cover' products. Restor-A-Finish penetrates and permanently restores most wood finishes without removing any of the existing finish. Restor-A-Finish maintains the original 'patina' of an antique finish, maintaining its character and value as an antique.

White heat rings and water marks, sun fade, oxidation, smoke damage, and most other blemishes can be quickly blended away with this simple wipe-on, wipe-off process.

Comes in 9 different colors. If you are uncertain about which color to use, then chose a color slightly lighter than your finish. Before you go to the extreme of stripping it, try restoring it!

Product Description

Product Description

In 1969, Douglas G. Howard set out to solve this dilemma: how can you eliminate blemishes in wood finishes and restore the original color and luster without removing any of the existing finish? Unable to find an answer at his local hardware store, he went to work in his garage to create his own product. His goal was to make something that would be much more than a surface treatment, yet nothing like a stripper or a refinisher. The key was to develop a formula that could clean and polish the surface, penetrate the finish with stain, and leave the original finish intact. The end result was Restor-A-Finish, Doug Howard's first in what would become a complete line of wood care products. For over 40 years, Howard's Restor-A-Finish has been a standard in the antique industry. Because Restor-A-Finish preserves the original wood finish it also helps preserve its authenticity and value, whereas stripping the finish may literally strip the piece of its value. Almost any existing wood tone, from a Birdseye Maple to a Jacobean, can be closely matched using one of the nine available finish colors. Trying it on just about everything with a traditional wood finish, antique dealers, refinishers, and homemakers have found it to be a safer and easier alternative to stripping and refinishing. Scratches, oxidation, white heat rings, watermarks, smoke damage, and sun fade simply disappear.

This stuff is amazing!
1920’s bed frame. Busted, filthy, and stored under cover outdoors for years. After some repair, a little scotch bright and a dusting i used the restoration product. Holy smokes, it’s beautiful again. I used a tung oil over it. It seems expensive, but it’s worth every $$! I used a pint and a half on the bed frame. And around a half pint on a matching dresser.

5.0 out of 5 stars Minimal effort with maximum results
Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2020
This stuff exceeded my expectations! It's a tinted oil that soaks in, hiding small scratches, and refreshing old, dried out wood.
My kitchen cabinets are probably original to my house that was built in the late 80s. Since buying our house 2 years ago, I've gone back and forth on what to do with them - whether to paint them, stain them, or some other option. I don't actually mind the wood, and hated the thought of painting over good quality maple cabinets. And staying them seemed like a lot of effort. Being military, we will be moving soon anyway, so replacing them wasn't an option, due not getting the return for the investment. After scouring Pinterest, I came across a similar product to this. After doing a quick Amazon search, Restore A Finish by far had the best reviews with a lot of photos to back it up.
I had previously cleaned my cabinets with Murphy's Oil Soap, so was able to do the treatment on my whole kitchen in about an hour and a half. The lower cabinets were in the worse shape, with lots of scratches (some pretty deep). The upper ones were just dulled by years of neglect and having been covered in grease prior to my cleaning them. I used an old baby wash cloth to apply the RAF, and an old tshirt rag to wipe it off. I did 2 cabinets at a time, which gave it time to soak in. When I was done with the 2nd one, I'd go back and wipe them both off really well. Not only did RAF make the minor scratches and wear disappear, but it minimized the deeper scrapes. I may go back over those areas with steel wool at some point, per the instructions. Overall, I'm very pleased with how they turned out. My cabinets look clean, refreshed, and have their natural luster back. We have wood trim in the rest of the house, so my next project will be to go over the baseboards and windowsills.
