Last updated on January 5, 2023

The average cost of a home gym is between $1,500 to $3,000. Read on to find out what these costs involve.

Do you want to build a beautiful gym at home, but are curious about how much dough you’ll need to put down? Then you’ve come to the right place. The cost is by far the biggest concern we hear whenever someone wants to turn their garage or spare bedroom into an iron paradise.

Making your gym at home isn’t as expensive as you may think. There are tons of cost-effective equipment you can grab online or at any sporting goods store, which will make your home gym fun and an excellent place to train.

Today, we’re going to see what kind of home gym you can make without breaking the bank.

Don’t get discouraged!

Like any other home renovation project, it can get expensive. However, that is if you don’t know what you’re doing and invest in the wrong equipment. You don’t need a bunch of fancy-schmancy cardio machines and complicated functional gear to get excellent results at home.

We’ve seen clients completely transform their health and fitness while working out at home without going into debt, and you can too.

Why Building a Home Gym is a Great Idea

Home gyms are starting to get the same cult-like following as standing desks.

Everyone who has one can’t seem to stop talking about how fantastic it is, and they aren’t wrong. There are many reasons why constructing a home gym is a great idea, but I’ll stick with the main benefits.

Save Money

Okay, so building your home gym might require some upfront capital. However, if you think long-term, building a home gym will be a more sound investment.

The average cost of gym membership in the United States is around $45 per month. That adds up to roughly $5,400 over the course of 10 years! Plus, that doesn’t consider the transportation or fuel costs going to and from the gym.

With $5,400, you could build yourself a luxury gym and still have some leftover for your favorite cheat meals. Therefore, investing in a home gym will save you thousands of dollars in the future.

Save Time

Let’s face it; getting to the gym isn’t always easy. It’s even more challenging if you need to drive a considerable distance just to workout.

With a home gym, you can rip out of your work clothes, put on some fresh fitness gear and get your pump on in a matter of minutes. The best part? You’re already home when you finish training!

Not only will your home gym save your precious dollars, but it will also protect your irreplaceable minutes on this beautiful planet.

Healthier Lifestyle

We are creatures of habit, and the environment we’re in significantly influences our patterns. Where we are and what we see can make us feel a certain way.

Having a home gym will give you more exposure to exercise, exactly what you need if you want to live a healthy lifestyle.

We often hear about how people found themselves much more motivated to workout after building their at-home gyms. They quickly noticed changes because it was easy to get started.

Making your own home gym is a significant step towards being a healthier human being.

Home Gym vs Gym Membership

There’s a ton of jazz on the internet about whether a home gym or gym membership is better for your wallet and your results. We’re here to clear some of the air and breakdown both options so you can get a good idea about which one is better for you.

As mentioned above, the average cost of gym membership in the United States over the course of 10 years is anywhere between $5,400 to $6,960 (depending on your state). Most people don’t like the idea of building a home gym simply because it’s more expensive upfront.

Is it possible to construct a home gym without destroying my bank account?

Well, it’s all about your priorities. A lot of people have strange habits when it comes to spending money, and we’re no exception. For example, we rush to the store to purchase a new smartphone for well over $1000 bucks, but won’t even put down a measly $30 for a gym membership.

Also, many of us will spend up $200 eating out over the weekend but claim an online training program that costs $15 is too expensive. I understand you need to enjoy your life, and it’s okay to go out to excellent restaurants or utilize modern technology. But if getting fit is something you want, you have to be willing to invest.

The average cost of a home gym is between $1,500 to $3,000, depending on how fancy the equipment you buy is. The fantastic thing about a home gym is once you build it, the upkeep is extremely low. Plus, you don’t need to buy everything in one go. Many of my clients start with a few dumbbells or resistance bands, then gradually add more equipment when the time’s right.

What Equipment Does Your Home Gym Need?

dumbbells

The answer is ambiguous since this would depend solely on your goals. However, if we were going to build the perfect home gym, here’s what we would add:

  • 1 to 2 barbells
  • A set of dumbbells (5 to 40 pounds)
  • A pull-up bar
  • A bench
  • A stationary box
  • Weighted plates

These are the essential pieces of equipment you would need to get a solid workout at home. If you want to get creative, you can add some medicine balls, resistance bands, or some gear for HIIT training, but only if you need it.

The Takeaway

If you’re like the many others who are considering building a home gym, you now have a bit more knowledge about what you’re getting yourself into.

Remember, you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on starting. Try buying a few pieces of equipment to use at home, and slowly transition into a full-on home gym.

Happy training!
