shiplap wall ideas

Last Updated on

Are your Pinterest boards full of shiplap accent ideas? It’s time to create your own shiplap walls with these ideas.

What is a shiplap wall anyway? The shiplap wall is a planked wall where the planks are overlapped with a small gap between them. They are usually painted white to create a rustic or farmhouse look.

Do you put shiplap over drywall? Yes. You simply attach it to the wall with nails. The process is straightforward enough for beginners to complete. Although it’s worth noting that if you use real shiplap planks, they are quite heavy and you will need some planning and help to complete your project.

Why is it called shiplap anyway? Shiplap refers back to the old shipbuilding days where the planks were overlapped in a similar way to create a sealed ship’s hull. Now we use the term to define the planked wall design where planks overlap.

Is shiplap out of style? It’s clearly not. Especially with all the farmhouse and rustic rage, there’s always a place in your home to add this accent.

How much does shiplap cost? $500 to $7,500, according to Home Advisor. But we have much cheaper options too (even free, if you’re fine with a faux look).

How to Plank a DIY Shiplap Wall

The basic steps to shiplap a wall are as follows:

  1. Measure the wall and the planks;
  2. Cut the planks;
  3. Sand, prime, and paint the planks;
  4. Mark the studs where the planks will be nailed to the wall;
  5. Hang the planks.

While the process of creating a shiplap wall is straightforward, it does require accurate measurement and cutting. You have to be aware of your home’s electric wiring too as not to hit any wires when nailing the planks.

It’s best if you use a specific idea that appeals to you, and follow the instructions on how to replicate it.
